Service options include one-time analysis projects, phased long term development activities, ongoing batch analysis for Q.C., and vertical integration consulting.
Material Characterization and Analysis
We offer detailed material characteristics analysis which can include particle size, distribution, purity, surface area, and composition. These reports have proven key in early phase development and fundraising activities, and can be customized to the needs of each client and unique project.
Electrochemical Performance Reports
Our internal electrochemical testing analysis can include first charge capacity, first discharge capacity, impedance and first cycle loss. These results are often utilized along with material characterization to provide a comprehensive understanding of a new material. Customized regimes are also available for cell testing.
Batch Qualification and Q.C.
Our batch qualification service is designed to provide 3rd party assessment of production material during the development process, or for quality control purposes. This service utilizes both the material characterization and e-chem analysis, and is aimed at identifying changes in quality or performance of a material over time.
Typical Material Qualification Timeline
The steps below are the general flow for material qualification and development projects. These steps are often customized, and each step may involve iterative revision cycles before the project proceeds to the next phase.
01 - Material Assessments and Optimization
The initial phase includes a series of tests including rheology, mix and coat trials, and raw ingredient experiments to learn how the material behaves without modification.
02 - Electrode Development
The 2nd phase includes formulation development with active and conductive aides, binders, solvents, mix methodology, coating trials and adhesion studies.
03 - Initial Cell Design
The early cell design phase includes component selection, energy vs. power loading selection, electrode design and specification, and the initial round of cell testing.
04 - Application Specific Cell Design
In this phase the cell is redesigned with the commercial application in mind. Cell dimensions, capacity, assembly method, unique processes, electrical specifications, and BoM are all built out and finalized in preparation for production scale up. Expanded testing is conducted to verify the cell design functions as intended.
05 - Scale Up
During the scale up phase, Polaris will work with the client's internal team to assist with safety testing, factory furnace SPC, application testing, and continued batch testing to verify the transition is going as planned.
06 - Quality Control
After production scale up, our team can assist in providing batch qualification and quality control services on an ongoing basis. Batch to batch continuity is critical for OEM suppliers, and ongoing analysis ensures anomalous batches are caught and errors are corrected quickly.
